Vegan Cooking at Home: French Grilled Cheese
Sometimes the body craves sweets. Other times, the body craves something salty. The tricky thing is, there are times that the body craves both! What to do, what to do….
Fortunately, curiosity, creativity, and mad science have combined to create something outstanding. You may be wary at first, but combining grilled cheese and French toast was one of the best things I’ve ever done. Not only because my bread was going bad and I needed to use it! Not only because soy cheese can be pretty awful on its own! Simply because, sometimes a touch of cinnamon and a couple slices of soy cheese can really make the mouth happy.
After all, what’s more important than making the mouth and tummy happy? Not much. Plus, this is another recipe that takes very little time and requires no special tools or ingredients. I didn’t burn or cut myself, nor did I light anything on fire. In my opinion, this makes for a winning recipe!
French Grilled Toast
1- Bread of Choice
2- Oil (I liked sunflower oil in this one)
3- Cinnamon and Salt
4- Vanilla Extract
5- Sliced Soy Cheese
6- Either Jam or Hummus (optional)
A- Pour a little oil on your pan, then add a pinch of salt, a teaspoon of vanilla extract, and a teaspoon of cinnamon. Add more cinnamon or sugar if you want it sweeter.
B- Put the bread in the pan and move it around a bit to collect cinnamon.
C- Once browned up, flip over.
D- Place one slice of “cheese” on each slice of bread. Add more cheese if you want more saltiness.
E- When “cheese” has melted a bit, flip one half of the bread onto the other.
F- Remove from pan and place on a plate.
G- It’s already delicious, but if you need more sweet or savoury, you can either dip it in your favourite jam or in hummus. I chose pine nut hummus!
If I had a bigger pan, I could have browned the bread more. However, I like very little cinnamon, so I didn’t mind this.
This is another light meal that filled me up and felt like dinner and dessert all in one! Perfect for a snack or lunch to-go, as well.
